The Mukaab

The Mukaab is a project bordering on the fantastic that is part of the Saudi government’s Vision 2030 strategy for the future of Riyaadh. It is a transformation of an entire district of the city which is based around a 400 meter cubic structure. The cube exterior is a 3m deep “screen” complete with video screens, circulation paths, and building systems. The screen covers 4 L-shaped corner towers that in turn surround a massive concrete dome-shaped atrium which houses a surreal tower structure which as the appearance of a stack of saucers. The interior of the dome will contain an immersive audio-video experience. The roof is an entire 1/4-mile square environment of its own that will feature outdoor attractions, residential, and hospitality spaces.

The project has myriad opportunities for innovative engineering in structural, architectural, MEP, AV, vertical transport and other systems. George worked with a team of acousticians on SD concept and planning, identifying acoustic and vibration challenges as well as preliminary mitigating strategies for the central tower, the outer corner towers, and the screen structure.
